EDGAR DEGAS (1834-1917)

Edgar Hilaire-Germain DEGAS
Group of 5 horses V/V

  • Foundry stamp: Guastini

  • Signature: Degas

  • Stamp: Additional cast authorised by the Degas Committee

  • In accordance with French legislation

At the time of Edgar Degas' death, the art world was unaware that, despite his great success at the Salon des Indépendants, his sculpture of the Little Dancer Aged Fourteen had been very controversial, that Degas had continued to sculpt in the intimacy of his studio and that is how he was discovered by his brother and his executor, 73 works representing dancers and horses. Among these, five horses are the subject of a bronze sculpture, the enlargement of which is authorized by the Edgar Degas Committee. These horses are stamped as follows:

  • 25 bronzes numbered from 1/25 to 25/25

  • 5 bronzes gilded with 24-carat gold leaf numbered from I to V

  • 1 bronze marked HEIR intended for the Degas Committee

  • 2 bronzes marked HC1/2 and HC2/2

The horses numbered from I/V to V/V, gilded with 24-carat gold leaf, were gilded by the master gilder Alain Paillet in Beauchamps (France).

This certificate concerns the group of 5 bronzes bearing the stamp. numbering V/V, produced by the Guastini foundry in compliance with the laws of the French Republic. No duplicate will be issued,
